Category Descriptions

Fiber optic bundles are assemblies of optical fibers bundled together in a specified configuration. They are key components in applications like spectroscopy, remote sensing, process monitoring and control, etc. Most bundles are application- and customer-specific in design; there are very few “industry-standard” configurations. Berkshire Photonics has many years’ experience assembling, testing and delivering fiber bundles, tailor-made to customer designs and specifications.

Some items to consider when specifying fiber bundles:

Fiber type. Berkshire Photonics has worked with almost every fiber type known. If you don’t know what kind of fiber will work best in your application, we can guide you.

Fiber count. Assemblies made by Berkshire Photonics may contain as few as two or three fibers or as many as 50 or more.

Arrangement. Common bundle configurations may include a ferrule at one end that holds multiple fibers in a close-packed pattern, with fanouts that split individual fibers into their own paths. Or they may align fibers in a linear arrangement at one end, and be randomly arranged in a close-packed pattern on the other end. In a bifurcated assembly, a grouping of fibers is separated into two legs, each with one or more fiber. We encourage inquirers to provide a sketch, diagram, or engineering drawing of the desired design.

Protection options. How do the individual fibers (or groups of fibers) need to be protected? We offer several options, including furcation tubing, reinforced jacketing with Kevlar strength members, steel monocoil tubing, and more.

Temperature rating. The operating and storage temperature range to which a bundle will be subjected will determine the materials and processes used to build them.

Connectors. The input and output legs of fiber bundles are commonly terminated with fiber optics connectors. We have extensive expertise with specialty fiber connectors, and can help determine the best connector for your application.

Other options. Berkshire Photonics offers bundles with vacuum feedthrough flanges, and can incorporate other optical components into the bundle design, such as filter, circulators, polarizers, couplers, etc.

Zero Dispersion Module

This Dispersion Module is a rack mountable dispersion shifted system that provides a total final output with no chromatic dispersion, which mimics existing fiber in the ground as a transparent switch between the local and diverse sites. The enclosures can be insulated to maintain thermal stability.
