SMA Connectors and Accessories
> SUBCATEGORIES:
The SMA fiber optic connector was one of the first connector styles to gain broad industry acceptance, and has remained a reliable, adaptable and widely-used product for almost 45 years.
Berkshire Photonics has a long history with SMA connectors, and is the industry’s go-to source for connector sets, parts, accessories and expertly-made assemblies.
Based on the well-established “SubMiniature version A” RF connector, the fiber optic version of the SMA shares the same ¼”-36 UNS threaded coupling mechanism. It is an unkeyed, non-contacting, air-gap design that incorporates a Ø3.17mm stainless steel or zirconia ceramic ferrule.
The industry nomenclature for this connector type is “SMA 905” or “F-SMA I”. A less-common variant with a stepped ferrule, known as “SMA 906” or “F-SMA II”, is also available. Both models are globally standardized by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).
Although no longer used in telecommunications, SMA connectors remain extremely popular in military, industrial, and medical applications. The design is simple, rugged and easy to handle. SMA connectors are particularly favored for use with large-core fibers; they are by far the most widely-used connector type for fiber sizes of 200µm and greater.
Berkshire Photonics stocks connectors and ferrules with bore sizes to accommodate common fiber diameters from 125µm up to 1040µm, and can custom-drill ferrules in-house for hard-to-find bore sizes up to 2200µm. All custom-drilled ferrules are 100% verified with traceable go/no-go pin gages.
Also offered are epoxy-free FiberGrip™ SMA connectors. FiberGrip™ connectors can be rapidly terminated with a simple tool that grips the connector body firmly onto the fiber coating. Designed for use with high-power medical laser delivery systems, FiberGrip™ connectors are autoclave sterilizable, are available with medical-grade materials, and are compatible with RFID technology.
For high-power applications, damage-resistant (DR) SMA connectors with freestanding fiber tips are available to lessen the chance of endface damage due to spot misalignment. For more efficient heat dissipation, beryllium-copper (BeCu) ferrules are a further option.
Rounding out the SMA product offering are numerous options for boot styles, dust caps, active device receptacles, custom overnuts, and more.
